To celebrate National Apprenticeship week Pat Carrington, Principal at City College Peterborough, went ‘Back 2 the Floor’ at The Peterborough School Nursery to see what it’s like to be a childcare apprentice.
The Greater Cambridge/Greater Peterborough Enterprise Partnership (LEP) encouraged businesses and training providers to become an apprentice for the day. As a great way to gain a new insight into the positive impact apprenticeships have on individuals and companies, City College were eager to be involved.
For her day ‘Back 2 the Floor’, Pat Carrington spent the afternoon with the staff at The Peterborough School Nursery, including previous apprentices Lucy Grenfell and PhilippaChevins who have both completed their Advanced Apprenticeship in Childcare with the College. Both Lucy and Philippa are now studying towards a Team Leader qualification.
Pat learnt a lot about what Lucy and Philippa do on a daily basis, such as feeding, changing, and making sure naptimes go to plan. Pat also had the chance to find out more about the great range of activities that are planned for the children, by the City College students, each day.
Lucy and Philippa are progressing very well with their studies. At the moment they’re focussing on creating some exciting projects to take forward as part of their studies: Lucy is developing a Communication and Literacy area for her pre-school group and Philippa is creating an interactive garden area for her under two group.
Pat commented “It was really eye-opening to see just how much the staff at the nursery do every day to provide a stimulating, healthy and secure environment for the youngsters to develop in during the important formative time of their life. It’s clear that Lucy and Phillipa and have both made the most of their apprenticeship and are doing a fantastic job at the nursery, So keep up the great work girls! ”
The nursery has been a hub for apprenticehips and growing talent. Pauline Bellamy, manager at the Peterborough School Nursery has always been a real advocate for apprenticeships and has taken on several apprentices over the years with City College Peterbough– all of whom have successfully achieved their qualifications.
The apprenticeship team and Pat would like to thank Pauline and the Peterborough School Nursery for your support with apprentices. We look forward to continuing to work with you in the future.
