Philippa Chevins recently completed an apprenticeship in Childcare with City College Peterborough. We asked her a few questions about her experience.
When you left school did you know that an apprenticeship was the route you wanted to take?
No, after I finished school I signed up at an agricultural college as I wanted to study to become a veterinary assistant, but I quickly realised this wasn’t the career for me. I decided to join an Entry to Employment (E2E) programme at City College Peterborough where I was able to work towards gaining a qualification while deciding what career path I wanted to follow.
Can you tell me how you found out about the apprenticeship?
Whilst completing my E2E course I had decided that childcare was definitely the career path I wanted to take, fortunately my tutor informed me about a work placement at a nursery and this is also the time that I was told about an apprenticeship opportunity. Theory isn’t one of my strengths so being able learn as you go whilst gaining an NVQ sounded perfect for me!
Can you tell me a bit about your experience studying at City College Peterborough?
I have really enjoyed studying towards my NVQ in Childcare, I found the lessons very interesting and I have received so much help and support from my tutors.
What would you say is the best thing about an apprenticeship?
An apprenticeship has given me the opportunity to progress within my workplace as I have been able to advance from relief practitioner to room leader. It has also given me more confidence!
What qualifications have you gained from the apprenticeship?
I have gained a Level 2 qualification in application of number, communication and ICT. I have also completed my Level 3 in Childcare and I am currently studying towards a Level 2 NVQ in Team Leading.
What would you say to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship?
I would say that it’s definitely worthwhile. You get so much support all while being paid to learn! It’s also very easy to understand as it’s broken down into manageable segments, making the qualification achievable.
