City College Peterborough hosted a royal party for Peterborough people to mark Her Majesty The Queen’s 90th birthday.

More than 100 people joined the celebrations on Thursday 9 June 2016 organised in partnership with Peterborough City Council.  HM The Queen turned 90 on April 21, but she also has an official birthday in June – this year it falls on Saturday, June 11.

Catering students from the college prepared a delicious three-course dinner for the VIP guests, a group that included 50 people also celebrating their 90th birthday this year.

Among the guests at the event was Dorothy Wray who was lucky enough to celebrate her 90th birthday on the same day.

Leader of Peterborough City Council, Councillor John Holdich, who attended the event, said: “We had a really fantastic response from the local community with people nominating family, friends and neighbours to join the party.

“All the guest places were soon filled and the party was a really fitting way for Peterborough people, many of whom were also born in 1926, to celebrate The Queen’s 90th birthday.”

Also at the party was Betty Horrell, wife of former Peterborough Mayor Councillor John Horrell’s wife.

Mrs Horrell was joined by Betty Hay,MBE, former headteacher of Caverstede Nursery School and a big advocator of helping young people with learning difficulties.

City College Peterborough Principal, Pat Carrington, added: “It was great to see so many Peterborough people join us for this special party.

“Food prepared by our young catering students together with our catering team provided the opportunity for people from different generations across the city to come together to celebrate The Queen’s birthday.

“The college has supported people who live and work in the local community for more than 70 years.”
