Lucy Grenfell recently completed an apprenticeship in Childcare with City College Peterborough. We asked her a few questions about her experience.
What were you doing before you started the apprenticeship?
Before I started my apprenticeship I was working in a school kitchen and I was also volunteering in the reception class.
When you left school did you know that an apprenticeship was the route you wanted to take?
No, I wasn’t quite sure what I wanted to do when I left school so I continued with my job at a local Primary School.
Can you tell me how you found out about the apprenticeship?
I decided that I wanted to pursue a career in childcare so I applied for a job at The Peterborough School Nursery. This was the time I found out about apprenticeships and I thought it could be a great way to further my childcare qualifications whist gaining the experience of working in a nursery.
Can you tell me a bit about your experience studying at City College Peterborough?
My tutor, Natalie Hall, was extremely helpful and supportive. The classes were always very interesting and informative and I was able to use the knowledge and skills learnt in my lessons for my job.
What would you say is the best thing about an apprenticeship?
I think the best thing is being able to work while you learn and as most of the course is practical it’s easy to gain knowledge of the role as it’s so relevant to what I’m doing in my job.
What qualifications have you gained from the apprenticeship?
I have gained an ICT and Level 3 qualification in childcare. I have also gained a wealth of knowledge of children which enables me to plan age appropriate activities. In addition, I have gained so much confidence since starting my apprenticeship and improved my time management and organisational skills. As I enjoyed my apprenticeship so much and I’m keen to progress my childcare career I am now currently completing my Level 2 Team Leader qualification.
What would you say to anyone who is considering an apprenticeship?
I would say the course is definitely worth the effort. It is important to plan and organise and get your work done. Help and support is there when you need it.
